Physical Therapy Evaluations and Therapeutic Services
Services will be provided through the Just Kids Diasuostic and Treatment Center.Just Kids Physical Therapy Department offers services to infants, toddlers and preschool children who may be at risk for, or exhibit, physical handicaps or movement problems that may adversely influence their motor development and affect their ability to learn, play, or achieve personal independence.
Children may be referred to physical therapy and receive individual evaluations to assess muscle strength, joint motion, motor developmental skills, balance and coordination skills, and quality or ease of movement in various positions and postures. Recommendations for treatment services are based upon the finding of this evaluation and may be initiated upon a written referral from a physician or nurse practitioner and approval of Early Intervention or CPSE (Committee for Preschool Special Education). Treatment goals and strategies are developed and individualized to meet each child’s needs. Treatment plans are continually reviewed, and are adapted in accordance with the child’s progress. Treatment goals are achieved through special positioning, carry and handling techniques, and specific exercises and activities.
Our physical therapy staff is comprised of New York State licensed physical therapists with extensive knowledge and experience in the evaluation of and treatment of the infant and preschool population. We have several physical therapists who are trained and certified in NDT (neurodevelopmental treatment). Staff also have specialized training in infant massage, kinesiotaping, orthopedics, central nervous system dysfunction, advanced therapy ball techniques, pediatric yoga, and adaptation and seating systems. All staff participate in continuing education sponsored and approved by New York State Department of Education and the American Physical Therapy Association. The physical therapy department also serves as a clinical site provider for students attending programs at many colleges and universities.
The physical therapy department at Just Kids offers a monthly pediatric rehabilitation clinic (birth-21 years) in collaboration with an orthopedic physician. Children and families may attend clinic to assess their child’s orthopedic concerns and possible need for orthotics and adaptive equipment.
An adaptive equipment and seating clinic is held monthly in collaboration with various equipment vendors to evaluate children for appropriate seating systems. Parents are invited to attend this clinic and are offered many options to address equipment needs. Vendors will work with the family to assist with insurance coverage.
The department works closely with local orthotists who can come to Just Kids to cast children for orthotics, and make necessary repairs while the children are at school. There is a weekly visit by an orthotist to the clinic.
