The Occupational Therapy department prides itself in using a whole child approach to evaluate and provide therapeutic intervention to our children. The staff are clinically trained therapists licensed by the New York State Office of the Professions with the knowledge and skills to address each child’s unique needs. Therapists work closely with classroom teachers to align treatment with a child’s Individualized Educational Plan (IEP). Treatment focuses on each child’s needs utilizing developmentally appropriate interventions focused on sensory processing, sensory motor, fine motor, visual motor, visual perceptual, play and self-care skills.
Therapists are part of an interdisciplinary team working together to meet the educational and therapeutic needs of the student. All therapists participate in department continuing education, evidence-based practices, and outside continuing education courses to serve our students. Services are both individually and in groups as mandated by each IEP. Treatment includes the use and evaluation of sensory strategies, sensory modalities, assistive technology devices, postural orthotics, upper extremity orthotics and positioning, seating and mobility systems.
The staff work closely with parents to ensure ongoing communication, parental engagement and activities parents may do at home to support the connection between home and school.
